When using fiberglass rod, it is important to use rod guides to keep the rod from bowing on the down stroke, when your windmill is pushing the rod down.

Many people have a difficulty installing the rod guides on the rod, because they wait until they are on the job, to try to drive the rod into the rod guide. This is a real mistake. They try to pound the rod into the rod guide on the ground, and the ground absorbs most of the impact.

The proper way to install a fiberglass rod into the rod guide is to start out with a solid surface to work on, preferably cement. Take a piece of 1 x 4 lumber, and shave the end just enough so that it will start into the rod guide opening.

Lay your rod guide on the cement with the slot up. Position the rod on top of the slot where you wish it to be. The manufacturer says to use 2 rod guides per length, one at the top of the rod just down from the top coupling, and one in the middle of the rod. Now place the 1 x 4 that you just shaved down, onto the top of the rod, and give it a healthy whack with a large hammer or mallet. This will drive the rod into the rod guide, and once it is in place, you will probably never get it off again.
