Stuffing Boxes are used at the top of a windmill well to allow the rod to stroke through, while preventing the water being lifted from escaping through the top of the pipe. The graphite rope packing used in the stuffing box is a lubricant for the rod and a packing against leakage. The stuffing box also gives you a well top point of centering, which prevents the rods from flipping around and rubbing. We also recommend rod guides on fiberglass rod to keep them centered in the well.

WINDMILL STUFFING BOXES

Windmill stuffing boxes are brass packing boxes that are screwed into a tee at the top of the well. The packing box is packed with graphite rope packing around the stuffing box rod, and a packing nut is tightened down to secure the graphic rope packing around the rod. This lubricates the rod, and prevents leakage from the top of the stuffing box.

Inverted brass stuffing boxes pump on the down stroke too.

$ 135.00 #3 Inverted Brass Tube Stuffing Box has a 1-1/8" inside diameter brass tube that is 18" long. The top brass connection is threaded 2" male iron pipe thread. The brass piston has two 1-1/8" leather cups on a 5/8" steel plunger rod with standard 5/8" rod threads. This IBT stuffing box can accommodate up to a 12" stroke. Larger diameter brass tubes and longer strokes are available on request.
The #3 Inverted Brass Tube Stuffing Box uses 1-1/8" leather cups with a 5/8" center hole. The leather cups are installed on the rod with the top one facing up, and the lower one facing down. Up is like the leather was a cup with a hole in the bottom. Down is like the cup was upside down drying and has a hole in the bottom.

At the top of your string of galvanized steel drop pipe going down to your cylinder in the well, you will need a galvanized steel tee to screw your stuffing box into, and the water pipe out the side of the tee to carry the water over to the destination, whether it is a stock tank of pond.
